Frequent pre-monsoon showers to overshadow Summer

April 17, 2015 1:57 PM |

Pre-monsoon in IndiaThanks to frequent pre-monsoon showers, scorching summer in North India may be little less harsh during April and May. After few good rainy spells in April, May too is expected to witness frequent wet spells, bringing much-wanted relief from the sweltering heat to the residents of North India.

Northeastern states and states in Peninsular India are already witnessing good pre-monsoon rain activity. The frequent, heavy spells of rain are likely to continue throughout the pre-monsoon season in these regions.

Moreover, the north and central parts that do not witness good showers during this time are expected to experience widespread, wet spells even before the monsoon, according to Skymet Meteorology division in India.

Pre-monsoon in North India

North India mostly receives dust storms and thundery activity followed by very less rain. The pre-monsoon season is generally on the drier side in this part of the country. However, the hilly states of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand receive good showers. In fact, these states receive more pre-monsoon rain than monsoon showers.

The main pre-monsoon months in India are April and May. During the pre-monsoon months, the maximum rainfall contribution comes from Northeast India, followed by South India. Then comes North India and finally the central states.

Monsoon enters North and Central India by mid-June. Before that only thundery activity is witnessed in these regions. By the end of May, monsoon clouds will travel across the Arabian Sea and enter Kerala this year.

Upcoming weather in North and Central India

The next fairly widespread rain in India will commence from April 26 and continue till May 2. Weather activity will start along the west coast by entering Maharashtra and then covering Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.

The second spell will be seen around May 6-7, which will affect North and Central India. This wet spell will last till May 14 with the intermittent activity of varying intensity. Before this spell, only light rain and dust storm will be witnessed in these regions.
