Godzilla floods in 5 states of East and Central India claim 46 livesSouthwest Monsoon may have brought some really good news for several parts of the country. However, for the past few days, multiple weather systems have been pounding rain over both the eastern and the central parts of the country.

In fact, these rains have wreaked havoc causing flooding in five states of East and Central India. Ganga and its many tributaries have been constantly on a spate. In fact, flood waters have entered many parts of the cities.

Properties have suffered major damage along with lakhs of people being displaced. In fact, this Godzilla flooding have killed at least 46 people. Not only this, thousands of people have also been evacuated in several areas of West Bengal, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh.

Several districts in Bankura, Burdwan, Durgapur and Asansol were submerged as water was released from several barrages of Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC). The flood gates of the Farakka barrage in West Bengal were also opened for managing the flood situation in Bihar in some way.

The Farakka barrage has 104 gates and opening a few gates will save Bihar from at least some of the flood fury. The barrage was built in the year 1975 for transferring water from the Ganga to River Hooghly.

In West Bengal, nearly 200 people were left homeless in a village in Malda after heavy rains washed away homes. In Jharkhand, at least a thousand mud houses were washed away along with transport system being severely affected.

The flood situation is expected to remain grim for at least the next 24 hours. While rains are expected to reduce over East India, central parts will receive more Monsoon showers in the coming days.
