Published on May 31, 2018: Monsoon rains which are counted from June have already begun from today as rainfall is calculated from the previous day. Thus, rainfall from 8:30 am on May 31 to 8:30 am on June 1 will be considered as the first day of the Monsoon season.

Since the onset phase, Monsoon covers a small area and it is only a portion of South and Northeast India which see the arrival of the Monsoon season. The Pan India normal rainfall on the first day stands at 2.7 mm and the next few days will also see rains of this amount only.

During the last few days, rains were quite good as there were Monsoon instigated systems present both in the Bay of Bengal as well as the Arabian Sea. These systems have now weakened and while the Bay system has crossed Myanmar, the low of the Arabian Sea has also weakened and drifted away.

Thus, first day Monsoon rains will occur over areas which have not seen Monsoon arrival yet including the regions of Jharkhand, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, parts of East Uttar Pradesh and Northeast India.

The West Coast which saw heavy rains will be silent on the first day of the Monsoon season. In fact, north, west and central parts of the country. Only isolated weather activity is expected over the hills of North India.
