Rain in Kolkata

Kolkata has been receiving good rains from past 2 days. During last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Tuesday, Kolkata had observed 16 mm rains. However, day before the city recorded whopping showers of 79 mm.

Most districts of West Bengal have observed moderate rains including Coochbehar that recorded 11.2 mm rains, Darjeeling recorded 11.6 mm showers, Diamond Harbor 8.8 mm, Jalpaiguri 5.5 mm and Digha that witnessed 28.3 mm spells. Few other regions observed light spells.

Reason for these good showers over the city can be attributed to the axis of Monsoon trough moving across Digha which is in close proximity of Kolkata. Further this trough is likely to move towards north.

Due to the oscillation of this trough, Monsoon got activated in parts of Gangetic West Bengal including Kolkata. However, light spells were observed over many parts of coastal and internal West Bengal.

The average monthly rainfall for the state capital is 352.4 mm and Kolkata was taking baby steps towards achieving the daunting target. However, last few good showers proved beneficial for the state capital and till date, the city recorded 607.6 mm rainfall. Hence, Kolkata has already surpassed its monthly mean by almost double the amount.

Now, rains are likely to continue for another 24 hours with reduced intensity. Thereafter, as the trough is shifting at a faster speed, so rain intensity is expected to witness a downfall.

At present, the seasonal rainfall for Kolkata stands at 4% more than normal.
