Last week of March ends with surplus rainfall

rain in bangalore The end of February and March have been very eventful this year as far as the weather is concerned. The country has observed four weeks - February 26 to March 4, March 5 to March 11, March 12 to March 18 and March 26 to April 1 - of excess rain. There has only been one week in between, from March 19 to March 25 that twenty two sub-divisions, which is about 80% of the country observed a deficit of 100%.

However, the last week from March 26 to April 1 ended with a surplus rainfall of 64%. Sixteen sub-divisions observed excess rain during this period. For instance Jammu and Kashmir received 91.1 mm of rain against the weekly average of 26.6 mm, which is 243% excess. Similarly Bihar in East India observed 19.1 mm of rain against the average of 2.7 mm, which is 606% excess.

While 5 sub-divisions that include South Interior Karnataka, Kerala West and East Madhya Pradesh, and Assam and Meghalaya observed normal rain (+19% to -19% is considered normal).

There were only four sub-divisions that were scanty. Marathwada observed a deficit of 92%, Chhattisgarh was deficit by 62%, while Rayalaseema and Lakshadweep were deficit by 98% and 96%, respectively (-60% to -99% considered scanty).

In the coming week the hills of North India will continue to receive light rain with heavy in Jammu and Kashmir. North East India too is expected to observe surplus rain during this period. The plains of North and East India will receive light rain.
