April is generally associated with rising temperatures and pre-monsoon activity across the country. Though Peninsular India has already started receiving frequent spells of per-monsoon showers, North India still seems to be under the grip of extended winter activity.
Talking about latest update on rain, three pockets across the country are witnessing rainy weather.
Rain in North India
The main characteristics of pre-monsoon rains are thunderstorms or dust storms accompanied by very short spells of rain. This time around, pre-monsoon activity has been mostly missing from this region.
Jammu and Kashmir has received very heavy rain in last 24 hours. The Western Disturbance moving across the region has also extended its influence to Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab and Haryana.
The plains received fairly widespread but light rainfall. In a span of 24 hours from 8.30 am on Wednesday, Ambala received 1.8 mm, Chandigarh 3.6 mm, Karnal 2 mm, Kurukshetra 1 mm, Jalandhar 2 mm and Kapurthala 1 mm of rain.
As have been reiterated by Skymet, the rain belt will cover Delhi, west Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and northern parts of Madhya Pradesh over the next 48 hours.
Rain in Northeast India
Northeastern states are also witnessing rainy weather. A low-level cyclonic circulation over Bihar and adjoining areas coupled with an anti-cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal are affecting the weather in all the seven states of the region.
In a span of 24 hours from 8.30 am on Wednesday, Dibrugarh in Assam recorded 33.5 mm of rain, Tinsukia 41 mm and Lakhimpur 37 mm. In Arunachal Pradesh, Tawang received 13 mm, Itanagar 57 mm and Passighat 15 mm of rain. While Cherrapunji in Meghalaya received 7.4 mm, Agartala in Tripura recorded 51 mm of rain.
Rain in Peninsular India
Pre-monsoon activity will continue in Peninsular India for another 24 hours. On Wednesday, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, South Interior Karnataka and Coastal Karnataka received some rain.
Madikeri and Mysore in Karnataka received 5 mm and 5.6 mm of rain, respectively. Mangalore received 20 mm of rain as well.
In Kerala, Kochi received 10 mm of rain and Kottayam 2 mm. Kannur, Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram received less than 1 mm of rain.
In Tamil Nadu, Coonoor received just 0.6 mm of rain. Madurai 28.2 mm and Kodaikanal 2.8 mm of rain.
