Monsoon in India
As expected, July has made a thumping start with torrential Monsoon rains lashing several parts of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat during the last three days. For the three straight days, three-digit rainfall had been an usual sight, with some record breaking rains as well.  On Sunday, Mumbai had recorded 375 mm of rain, which highest rainfall in span of 24 hours in last 10 years.

In fact, Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh has recorded 176 mm in last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday, while Khandwa recorded 109 mm of rain. There are several such figures that country saw in span of just three days i.e. July 1-3.

According to Skymet Weather, the revival of Monsoon was on account of a well-marked low pressure area travelling across Central India, an active off-shore trough along the West Coast and a cyclonic circulation over east-central Arabian Sea off Maharashtra coast.

As s result, the countrywide rainfall deficiency for the season also started improving but marginally. June had ended with the record deficiency to the tune of 33%. As on July 3, the countrywide rainfall deficiency stands at 28%, wherein India had recorded 138.3 mm against the normal 191.6 mm from June 1 to July 3.

This improvement in rain deficiency is likely to continue for the coming days as well, but there lies a daunting target ahead. According to G P Sharma, President- Meteorology, Skymet Weather, "Although there is a promising fortnight in offing but the matter of concern is the significant rise in normal average rainfall during July."

July is the rainiest month of Southwest Monsoon season, followed by August. Average rainfall for the July is very high, as we can realize from the fact that the normal rainfall on the daily basis is over 9 mm.

Looking at the rainfall figures in the last two days, there has been improvement in the rainfall deficiency. However, the margin of improvement is not much and rainfall has been revolving around normal average only.

As per weathermen, the rainfall deficiency would continue to decrease in the coming days and rainfall would continue to hover around normal or even above that. But since target is huge, country would continue to struggle with rainfall deficiency.
