Monsoon Likely to Make Timely Onset over Andaman and Nicobar Islands

May 13, 2015 1:33 PM |

AndamanPre-Monsoon activity has gained strength and become more widespread, indicating that Monsoon is round the corner.

Monsoon first makes onset over Andaman and Nicobar Islands – official onset date is May 20 - and then advances to cover more parts of Bay and Kerala. But before the onset, the weather in the region starts showing variation in terms of change in wind pattern, frequent and widespread rain, clouding, high humidity and temperatures. This is largely the weather condition being observed in the Andaman Sea and neighbourhood at the moment.

The advance of Monsoon takes place due to some weather system which has to pull the current. This assisting system could be a cyclonic circulation, low pressure area or a depression. Currently, there is a cyclonic circulation in extreme southern peninsula, which is giving widespread heavy rain in the region.

The cyclonic circulation is expected to remain in the region for 48 hours with marginal northward shift. There are high chances of the system turning into a low pressure area. According to Skymet Meteorology Division, the system is likely to travel along and off the east coast leading to rain and clouding in Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Bay region.

This could possibly usher in timely arrival of Monsoon over the Andaman Sea and Bay Islands. However, declaration of onset is done with caution as the weather has to sustain for some time in the region. Any large gap or lull in the weather would mean temporary arrival of the Monsoon. A fresh date of the onset is announced only when there is a prolonged spell of rain in the region.
