The onset of Monsoon on June 5 gave some good rainfall activity over parts of Peninsular India. In the next 24 hours it travelled to cover entire Northeast India giving moderate to heavy rain in the region. Before the onset too, fair amount of pre-Monsoon rain was observed across the country, which contributed to the weekly rainfall figure. Central India was the only region where very minimal activity was observed. It is to be noted that rainfall for the Monsoon season is counted from June 1, irrespective of its onset date.
Monsoon performance in East and Northeast India
In the last one week Northeast India received good widespread rain due to which the rainfall figure in the region was excess by 13%. East India however, observed scanty rain. Out of the seven sub-divisions in East and Northeast India three were excess while two were scanty and one was deficient. All the three surplus sub-divisions of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya and NMMT (Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura) are from Northeast India. This clearly explains that Northeast India received some very good rain in last one week.
Monsoon performance in Northwest India
Monsoon performance in Northwest India has been mixed. In some pockets the rainfall amounts have been good, while in others it has been in excess. For Instance the sub-divisions of east and west Uttar Pradesh have observed scanty rain, while rainfall in Punjab has been in excess of 89%. Rainfall amounts in hill states of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh have also been in excess. Haryana and Delhi have deficient by 39%. Overall the region has been surplus by 27%.
Monsoon performance in Central India
Central India has been the worst performing region in the country during this week. Rainfall in the region has been minimal, mostly deficient and scanty. Out of the ten sub-divisions 4 have been scanty, while two – east Madhya Pradesh and Madhya Maharashtra - have been deficient. The overall rainfall deficiency in the region is the highest at 26%.
Monsoon performance in Peninsular India
Despite some good rain in the last few days, the rainfall amounts in the region have been deficient by 5% this week. That is because the normal rainfall figures itself are very high during this period.
The eastern half of the region which includes Tamil Nadu, Rayalaseema, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry have observed very good rain. Rainfall in Rayalaseema is surplus by 58%, while in coastal Andhra Pradesh it is excess by 71%.
The western half which usually enjoys very good rain during this period has not performed well. For instance rainfall in Kerala has fallen short by 67% this week. Coastal Karnataka is also scanty by 69%. Overall the rainfall in the region is scanty by 5%.
