Several parts of Maharashtra are reeling under drought like situation at present. The state has largely remained rain deficient so far and we do not foresee any significant weather activity coming up to improve the situation.
Marathwada is facing the worst situation. Its biggest water reservoir- Jayakwadi, has zero water stock at present. In fact, a total of only 2.86% of water is left in the reservoirs of Marathwada.

Looking at the ongoing conditions, we can say that Maharashtra’s water crisis will intensify in the coming days. The data reveals that at present, nearly 10,506 townlet and 4920 villages in six divisions of Maharashtra are facing acute shortage of water. Moreover, the state is battling severe heat wave condition with temperatures breaking all records.
Marathwada is the worst drought-hit region, as eight of the nine reservoirs have no water at all. Considering the delayed Monsoon, the demand is on the rise, particularly in Aurangabad division.
Heat wave, depletion of water and delayed arrival of Southwest Monsoon are all the factors resulting in a water crisis. To solve this situation, 6209 tankers have been arranged to supply water to drought-prone areas, which is the highest figure in the history of Maharashtra. In Pune division, 1016 tankers are supplying water against only 67 last year.
‘Nashik, Pune and Marathwada regions are the most affected areas’, reveals Rural Water and Sanitation department.
In October 2018, drought was declared in 151 out of 358 tehsils, including nearly half of the state.
Looking at the current situation, Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis has taken permission from the election commission to allow drought relief work to begin. He had earlier stated to make the state tanker-free by 2019.
