Patchy rainfall to continue over parts of North India

August 10, 2015 1:53 PM |

Rain in North IndiaParts of North India have been receiving good rainfall since last 2 to 3 days. But despite good rains, rain deficiency for the month of August still persists. However, as far as agriculture is concerned, these rains have been sufficient for Kharif crops in the region.

As far as the hilly states in North India are concerned, the forecast for coming days is not too encouraging. The same stands true for Punjab and Haryana. But Delhi and West Uttar Pradesh (UP) are expected to receive good rainfall for next two days. Whereas Punjab and Haryana will receive subdued rainfall only.

Thereafter, eastern parts of Punjab (Chandigarh, Patiala, etc.) and eastern parts of Haryana (Ambala, Karnal, Kurukshetra, etc.) will start receiving light to moderate rainfall. From August 13, fairly widespread rain of moderate intensity is expected over parts of West UP including places like Meerut, Muzaffarabad, Lucknow, Bareilly, and Agra. Delhi will continue to receive patchy rainfall for next four to five days. Weather will not turn dry in North India and patchy rainfall is likely to continue in the region for two more days.

It must be remembered that in the month of June, very good rainfall was witnessed over North India and all parts of the region ended with normal rain. The state of Jammu and Kashmir recorded an excess of 89%. In July, rainfall in the region was subdued and the figures dropped significantly. Most regions ended up with below normal rains, except for Jammu and Kashmir which recorded an excess of 38%.

Now rainfall in August has also shown a decreasing trend. Only Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh have recorded an excess of 3 to 4% so far in the first week of the month. It will be interesting to note how the month pans out for the region which has shown a decreasing trend since the onset of Monsoon in June.
