Punjab and Haryana to experience rain for another 48 hrs, winter chill to set in by Dec 1

The neighbouring states of Punjab and Haryana have experienced winter rainfall for the second consecutive day. Widespread rain and isolated hailstorm activities have been reported during the last 24 hours.

These rains can be attributed to the Western Disturbance over the Himalayas with its induced Cyclonic Circulation over North Rajasthan and adjoining Haryana.

As the system is likely to persist for some more time, rain is expected to continue in the region, however, with comparatively lesser intensity today. By tomorrow, the WD would move away, but its remnants might keep the rains going along the foothills for another 24 hours.

Whenever the systems form and give rain, the night temperature tends to rise. This is probably the reason why winter hasn’t tightened its grip over the plains yet. Minimums that usually by this time drop to single digits, are still settling between 11 and 16 degrees Celcius in most parts.

The region has also not seen any significant formation of fog so far. Likewise, the winter chill has been missing.

According to our meteorologists, typical winter is expected to set in only after 48 hours, i.e after the passage of the Western Disturbance when the dry and cold north-westerlies would resume. The chilly winds will find a clearance to travel from the snow-clad mountains of the Himalayas, which is experiencing widespread snowfall at present.

After the passage of this WD, feeble systems would still keep forming, but they would not bring much difference to the temperatures and minimums may settle in single digits. Both the states would also observe frequent formation of ‘moderate to dense’ fog December 1 onward.
