Rain in Delhi over the weekend, five-month long dry spell to end

March 3, 2016 6:26 PM |

DelhiWarm weather conditions in Delhi-NCR have wreaked havoc over the residents of the national capital. Warm weather conditions during the day have already been resulting in discomfort.

Now, nights have also become warmer. Minimum temperature has reached up to 17 degree Celsius. For the past few months, the national capital has remained mainly dry.

Since September 20, there has not been a single day when Delhi has received more than 1 mm rainfall in a span of 24 hours. Less rain also led to high levels of pollutants in Delhi due to which the city was surviving under a thick layer of smog and polluted days. Winter this year was also one of the most polluted winters in Delhi in the past 5 years.

Between September 20, 2015, and March 3, 2016, Safdarjung Observatory in Delhi has only received 2.9 mm rain against the average of around 70 mm.  Delhi has already recorded the driest winter of the decade after 2005. Now, a fresh Western Disturbance will affect the hills of North India from March 4. This system will also result in some measurable rain over Delhi-NCR.

The city is expected to receive good rains starting Saturday, March 5 and will continue in patches throughout Sunday. Cloudy conditions will be observed over the city starting tomorrow. This rainy spell will result in some relief from the ongoing weather conditions. Both minimum and maximum temperatures will witness a marginal drop. However, the relief will be short-lived and warm weather conditions will once again take over after the sky becomes clear once again.
