These showers have arrested the rise in mercury, which is presently hovering around 24°C.

With 42 mm of rain in span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Wednesday, the city has already surpassed its monthly average rainfall of 35.2 mm only in a days time. It is also the highest rainfall recorded in the span of 24 hours during the month of March in last 10 years.

These ongoing showers are on account of the cyclonic circulation persisting over Odisha, Jharkhand and adjoining West Bengal. Another cyclonic circulation is marked over Bangladesh. Moreover, a trough is also likely to develop from Bangladesh to Coastal Andhra Pradesh across Gangetic West Bengal. This will further enhance the rain activity, which will continue over Kolkata for another 2-3 days from March 8 until March 11.

In wake of these ongoing showers, maximum temperatures have witnessed a significant drop that settled at 27.6°C on Wednesday, which was six degrees below normal.  These temperatures are not expected to rise before March 14.

Thus, people in Kolkata can brace for some pleasant weather conditions ahead.
