The air quality in Delhi and NCR area worsens as pollution has entered into ‘poor to very poor’ category yet again. At present, PM 10 is in poor category, while PM 2.5 in most of the areas is in ‘very poor’ category, with overall AQI standing at 342. In fact, one or two pockets such as Noida and adjoining areas are battling severe levels of pollution.

According to our meteorologists, there has been a sudden increase in the pollution levels on Monday. The reason being the blow of light and variable winds over the region since the last evening. Moreover, minimums have dropped to 13 to 14 degree Celcius, resulting in the formation of haze and mist during morning hours. The combined effect of dust particles, smoke particles and various other pollutants altogether with mist and haze has resulted in the formation of smog.

These air pollutants stick to the water vapour available in mist and haze. Due to lack of winds, they remain suspended near the earth’s surface. The smoke from vehicular traffic and industries makes the situation worse.

The meteorologists have predicted a further increase in the pollution levels and AQI will enter into 'severe' category in some more parts of Delhi and NCR area during the coming days.

Talking about the weather system, a Western Disturbance is over Jammu and Kashmir. Another Western Disturbance can be seen approaching the Western Himalayas. These systems would restrict the flow of winds, thus resulting in high pollution levels for the next three to four days.

A change is this scenario is anticipated November 15 onward after the passage of this Western Disturbance. As this system passes, moderate winds from northwest direction would take over the region and help in dispersal of pollutants.
