The recent encounter of North India with the over-hyped dust storm and thunderstorm activities clears out that May is one of the vulnerable pre-Monsoon months. The period is favorable for dust storms, thunderstorms, thundershowers and lightning strikes in parts of North India which occurred during the recent spell on May 7 and 8.
The hills of North India also experienced heavy pre-Monsoon activities in terms of heavy rain, thundershowers and hailstorm activities. The arrival of an active Western Disturbance also added to these pre-Monsoon activities which was the case in the recent thunderstorm spell that covered both northern plains as well as hills.
During this spell, the ‘Queen of Hills’, Shimla recorded some heavy rain and hailstorm activities. In fact, Rajouri, despite the fact is not in the upper levels, witnessed heavy snow along with some snowflakes in Leh, which is a desert region. These rains even halted the famous Kedarnath Yatra.

As per Skymet Weather, these activities were in the sequel to the pre-Monsoon thunderstorm and dust storm that occurred on May 2. However, the activity was widespread and from Jind and Kaithal in Haryana, the activity captured Delhi NCR and West Uttar Pradesh. Despite this, it was not as commensurate as was hyped.
During this time, the activity becomes very fast paced. From their formation to their passage, every activity becomes rapid. The glimpse of this was seen yesterday with the thunderclouds rapidly getting formed over Delhi and NCR, and as quick as their formation, they quickly moved and cleansed the area after giving some spells in parts of Faridabad, Ghaziabad, and Noida.
Now, as per Skymet Weather, a lean period is foreseen for parts of North India including plains and hills for the upcoming two days. Thereafter, another Western Disturbance with an induced cyclonic circulation is expected to approach Western Himalayan region on May 13.
Along with the system, the dry spell and clear skies would accumulate heat and thus thundery activity is once again expected around May 13. Once again, the intensity and spread of the activity is likely to cover most parts of North India. During that time, hailstorms and light to moderate rains in the plains and snowfall in the upper reaches of the northern hills can be expected.
