Thunderstorm may occur over Delhi-NCR

May 10, 2016 1:54 PM |

Thunderstorm may occur over Delhi-NCRPre-Monsoon showers have been lashing several parts of the country. Cities including Bangalore, Hyderabad and Kolkata have received their fair share of rains and are likely to receive more in the coming days. However, rains have remained almost absent from most areas of Delhi and the NCR region.

In fact, in the name of Pre-Monsoon showers Delhi received light rain and thunderstorm between May 4 and 5. While Palam observatory recorded 1 mm of rain, traces of rain were recorded at the Safdarjung Observatory.

However, this spell of rain and the weather activities in the neighbouring regions have been keeping intense heat far away from the national capital. In fact, since the last five days, maximums in Delhi have not even touched the 40-degree mark.

Presently, a low level cyclonic circulation is hovering over the Punjab region. A trough is also extending southeastwards close to the Uttar Pradesh region. The combined effects of these systems may make conditions favourable for some thunderstorm activity over Delhi-NCR.

While any intense weather activity is not likely over the national capital, the possibility light dust storm/thunderstorm accompanied with very light rain during the next couple of days cannot be ruled out. These conditions are likely to keep the temperatures under check, somewhere in the high 30s.
