Well-Marked Low Pressure Weakened Over The Bay Of Bengal: Weather Activity Shrinks
Key Takeaways:
- Low pressure over the Southwest Bay of Bengal has weakened and is drifting northeastward.
- Rain activity over Kerala and Tamil Nadu will continue for about three days.
- Weather conditions will likely improve over Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka after 28th Feb.
- T-20 World Cup matches are largely expected to remain safe, with minor interruption possible.
The well-marked low pressure area over Southwest Bay of Bengal (BoB) has weakened to a low pressure area. The weather system has steered away northeastward, distancing itself from the coastline, and is now marked as a low pressure area over Southwest and adjoining Central Bay of Bengal. The cyclonic circulation persists up to 20,000 feet. However, the low pressure will weaken further and also drift northeastward over the central parts of BoB. The associated cyclonic circulation may continue for another 72 hours, but the weather activity will remain confined to the oceanic region.
Under the influence of this system and another circulation over Southeast Arabian Sea, there was scattered rain and thundershowers over Kerala and Tamil Nadu, with large spread over the former. Moderate to heavy rainfall was recorded at Thiruvananthapuram, Punalur, Cochin, Kozhikode, and isolated showers over interiors of Tamil Nadu. Similar pattern of weather activity is likely for the next about three days. The isolated weather activity may even extend to South Interior Karnataka and Coastal Karnataka. Broad clearance over the region is expected on 28th Feb and later.
With the weakening and drifting of the system over Central BoB, the weather conditions will improve over Tamil Nadu and the island nation Sri Lanka. This will be a big relief for the T-20 Cricket World Cup being jointly held by India and Sri Lanka. Earlier, inclement weather activity had led to washout/interruption of a couple of events. Most locations in Sri Lanka will also become safe for conduct of the tournament. There is a match in Chennai on 26th Feb, and it will be held in a safe window of weather. There are still four confirmed matches in Kandy and Colombo on 24th, 25th, 27th, and 28th Feb. Both the venues are located on the southern margins of the country. There is no complete clearance extended for the venues, but the conduct of matches will be possible. Minor interruption cannot be ruled out. The semi-final match on 04th March will get decided later and held at Kolkata or Colombo. In case of the latter, similar forecast holds good for that venue. All the remaining T-20 matches in the Indian stadiums will remain completely safe, right till the final on 08th March 2026 at Ahmedabad.
