Western Disturbance brings intermittent rain in J&K, Himachal and Uttarakhand

February 11, 2014 1:53 PM |

The characteristics of rain in the month of February are different from rain when we are thick into winters. The main features of rain in the second month of the year are quick and frequent occurrence of systems, fast clearance of its effects and short spells of precipitation. Winter rain in India in the month of February is generally sporadic and not too intense. Usually this intermittent rain has little effect on temperature and fails to add enough moisture in the air for the formation of dense fog.

The Western Disturbance which has been affecting weather in North India in terms of clouding since 9th of February, brought light rain for the next two days. The system travelled from the southwest to the northeast direction and covered central Uttar Pradesh as well but brought rain only in the hilly regions of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

Here’s a list of precipitation in the last 24 hours:

Name of state Name of place Precipitation in millimetres
Jammu & Kashmir Quazigung 1.8
Jammu & Kashmir Gulmarg 0.6
Jammu & Kashmir Pahalgam 6.4
Jammu & Kashmir Srinagar 0.6
Jammu & Kashmir Bhadrawah 1.8
Jammu & Kashmir Banihal trace
Jammu & Kashmir Leh trace
Himachal Pradesh Chamba 7.3
Himachal Pradesh Keylong 1
Himachal Pradesh Kalpa 1
Himachal Pradesh Manali 4

Rain affects temperatures

Even Joshimath and Almora in Uttarakhand received 3 mm and 1 mm of rain respectively. Due to rain in the hills, the day temperatures in these regions along with the adjoining plains dropped by 3°C to 5°C. The maximums recorded on Monday was 5°C below normal at 15.6°C in Jammu, 7°C below normal at 12.4°C in Katara, 4°C below normal at 8.1°C in Batote and 3°C below normal average at 5.8°C in Srinagar. In Himachal Prdesh as well, maximum in Kullu was 5°C below normal at 11.2°C, 6°C below normal at 1.4°C in Kalpa and 7°C below normal average at 12°C in Sunder Nagar.

The weather systems during this part of the year track southwards and bring light but widespread rain. Similarly, the Western Disturbance which will affect weather in India from the 14th of February will bring the first extensive spell of winter rain in India. The belt of rain will stretch from Punjab, Haryana and Delhi to Northeast India. Good showers are expected in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh and Northeast India. Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand could receive snowfall as well. This Western Disturbance will be active till the 17th of February.
