Two earthquakes rattle Indonesia, minor injuries reported

Indonesian Earthquake

A series of earthquakes rocked Indonesia early Thursday morning. People in Indonesia woke up to the shaking earth when back to back two earthquakes hit the region.

As per United States Geological Survey (USGS), two earthquakes measuring at a magnitude of 5.1 and 5.6 hit the Aceh province between 1 am and 3 am. The temblor led to collapse of two houses, while several people were injured.

Reportedly, the first earthquake with 5.1 magnitude was felt 12 km West of Reulet, Indonesia at a depth of about 28.8 km. Meanwhile, the other with 5.6 magnitudes was 18 km west-northwest of Reulet at around 20.3 km under the earth’s crust.

In fact, Indonesia was rattled by an earthquake last night as well when a quake with a magnitude of 4.5 on Richter scale hit the country at around 77 km Northwest of Bonjol, Indonesia at a depth of 150.8 km.

As per the Indonesian Red Cross, two houses have been reported to have been collapsed in Pidie Jaya near the epicenter, while the Trianggadeng district reported nine injuries.

Not to forget, last year on December 7, Aceh province was shaken by a 6.5 magnitude quake that took more than 100 lives, destroying or damaging more than 11,000 properties.

As per the USGS, Indonesia is one such country which is prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions as it is positioned on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, where tectonic plates collide. The Ring of Fire was shaken in recent months as well when tremors were felt in New Zealand, Peru, Japan, and Indonesia.
