Unseasonal Rains Over Mumbai To Cease Soon: Fair Weather Conditions Mid-Week Onwards
Quite unusually, Mumbai has been receiving rain on a regular basis over the last ten days. After the withdrawal of the monsoon, Mumbai invariably slips into a deep slumber and witnesses fair weather conditions from mid-October onwards. Yes, cyclonic activity in the Arabian Sea, if any, on account of post-monsoon storms, does liven it back into action. And it happened this season wherein a depression was lingering over various parts of the ocean, starting 22nd October from the Lakshadweep region. The low-pressure area, a residual of this depression over the Northeast Arabian Sea, has now become less marked. However, the remnant cyclonic circulation persists over the same region and is still driving some weather activity over Gujarat and Konkan.
Yesterday, the city observed moderate showers during afternoon hours and another light spell early this morning. The adverse weather conditions stalled the Women’s Cricket World Cup proceedings for some time yesterday. Mercifully, a clear window during the evening and early night facilitated the continuation of the match before clamping down yet again in the wee hours. Unseasonal weather activity is likely to continue for another three days, albeit remaining patchy and of short duration.
The cyclonic circulation of the leftover low pressure over the Northeast Arabian Sea is still pumping moist winds along the Konkan Coast. Also, a weak north-south trough is extending along the West Coast from Kerala to South Gujarat. The combination of the two will trigger scattered rainfall along the Konkan region in general and Mumbai in particular for another 2–3 days. After this period, both these features are likely to get diffused and resume the normal pattern.
From 6th November onwards, the anticyclonic pattern over the central parts of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh will strengthen. This feature will fan dry easterly land winds across Madhya Maharashtra, North Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh. Typical fair weather conditions of November, with clear skies, pleasant winter chill, and murky mornings—more so for the northern plains—will set the benchmark for the transition to the seasonal changeover.
