Gujarat is in the grip of intense monsoon activity, with widespread heavy rainfall, landslides, and multiple districts on orange alert as the southwest monsoon gathers momentum. Triggered by a combination of cyclonic circulations and a deepening monsoon trough, the weather systems are fueling continuous rainfall across the state, disrupting normal life and prompting swift government response.

Monsoon Systems Strengthen Over Bay of Bengal and Central India

A cyclonic circulation over central Uttar Pradesh—remnant of the previous low-pressure system—continues to keep the monsoon stream active. Simultaneously, a fresh cyclonic circulation is developing over the Bay of Bengal and Gangetic West Bengal, likely to strengthen further in the next 48 hours. These systems are enhancing westerly monsoon currents, particularly along the South Gujarat coast.

Surat, a key city in South Gujarat, recorded 51 mm rainfall in the morning, followed by an additional 58 mm in the subsequent six hours till 2:30 PM. Intermittent moderate to heavy spells are likely to continue over Surat, Vapi, Valsad, Navsari, and Bharuch during the next 48 hours.

Weather Alert for Gujarat: Next 4–6 Hours Crucial

Skymet Weather has issued a weather alert for several districts of Gujarat, predicting intermittent spells of moderate to heavy rain and thundershowers, accompanied by gusty winds (30–40 km/h). The alert covers Ahmedabad, Amreli, Anand, Aravalli, Banaskantha, Bharuch, Bhavnagar, Botad, Gandhinagar, Kheda, Mehsana, Mahisagar, Narmada, Navsari, Panchmahal, Patan, Sabarkantha, Surat, The Dangs, Tapi, Vadodara, and Valsad.

Landslides, Dam Alerts, and Rising Rainfall Totals

In Banaskantha district, a landslide on the Amba Ghata-Danta road blocked one of the four lanes following intense rainfall. The area recorded 226 mm of rain in the last 24 hours. Amirgadh, also in Banaskantha, received 127 mm in just four hours on Sunday morning. Thanks to rapid response by the Roads and Buildings Department, the blocked route was quickly reopened.

As of Sunday 6 AM, 147 talukas across Gujarat had received rainfall. The State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) confirmed that Gujarat has recorded 16% of its seasonal average rainfall, with Saurashtra leading at 20.5%, followed by Kutch (17.57%), East Central Gujarat (17.45%), and North Gujarat (13.75%).

Out of 251 talukas:

  • 100 received between 51–125 mm
  • 81 between 126–250 mm
  • 37 between 251–500 mm rainfall

Fourteen dams are on high alert, nine on alert, and 11 under warning. Eight dams are filled to capacity, 99 are up to 25%, and 57 are between 25–50%.

Orange Alert Till June 26, Heavy Rain Likely Till June 28

The national weather agency has issued an orange alert for Gujarat till June 26, with a heavy rainfall warning in place through June 28. A trough extending from South Pakistan to Gangetic West Bengal, along with a cyclonic circulation over central India, continues to energize the monsoon flow over the state.

Heavy rains have also lashed parts of Jamnagar, Junagadh, Porbandar, Rajkot, Valsad, Surat, and Navsari. Specific rainfall figures include:

  • Kalavad (Jamnagar): 110 mm
  • Keshod (Junagadh): 97 mm
  • Kutiyana (Porbandar): 93 mm
  • Paddhari (Rajkot): 90 mm
  • Umarpada (Surat): 50 mm

Emergency Measures and Government Preparedness

District administrations are on high alert for waterlogging, flash floods, and infrastructure damage. Disaster response teams, including NDRF and SDRF units, are deployed in vulnerable zones under orange and red alerts. Control rooms are operational 24/7, while departments of health, water supply, and power have been put on standby.

Authorities are actively monitoring dam levels and have directed local bodies to ensure proper drainage, emergency evacuations if necessary, and rapid restoration of essential services.

Conclusion: Gujarat Must Brace for Extended Monsoon Impact

With fresh systems brewing over the Bay of Bengal and persistent moisture inflow from the Arabian Sea, Gujarat is poised to experience continued wet conditions in the coming days. Skymet urges residents to remain alert, follow local advisories, and take all necessary precautions during this extended spell of heavy rainfall.
