Delhi 1

The national capital of the country witnessed abrupt thunderstorm and rain yesterday evening. This was the third spell within the month of May. Such activity is common during this time of the season; however the intensity is a startling factor.

The reason for this weather situation could be attributed to the high temperatures and easterly winds. To add up, there is a Western Disturbance and cyclonic circulation affecting the region.

Yesterday, storm also reduced the visibility to almost nil disrupting the normal life. In fact, traffic also slowed down over many places. As per weathermen, the wind speed was recorded to be 109 km/hr at Safdarjung Observatory, while 95 km/hr at Palam Observatory.

Talking about the casualties, a person has died in Noida and two have died in Delhi after a billboard collapsed due to the thunderstorm. People in open areas were seen running for shelter as trees swayed about them. The storm was relatively intense.

Rain recorded at Safdarjung Observatory was 4.2 mm and Palam Observatory 1.2 mm during the last 24 hours.

As of now, the weathermen expect the situation to remain conducive for another spell of thunderstorm or dust storm over the national capital and its adjoining areas of Punjab, Haryana, North Rajasthan and West Uttar Pradesh today evening. However, the intensity would remain on the lower side and there are very less chances of such activity to happen tomorrow.

This forthcoming spell would be due to the passage of Western Disturbance over Jammu and Kashmir and induced cyclonic circulation over North Rajasthan and adjoining Haryana. Also, a trough is running close to Delhi NCR. These systems will continue to attract humid easterly winds leading to the thunderstorm.
