Chennai Rains: City records 169 mm in 24 hours, hefty rains ahead

October 31, 2017 10:30 AM |

Chennai rains which had been on the backseat for a while have once again taken the driver’s seat and are on full gear right now. The Northeast Monsoon saga seems to have begun over the city of Chennai as heavy showers have been lashing the capital city of Tamil Nadu during the last 24 hours.

In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday, the Nungambakkam observatory recorded a whopping 116 mm of rainfall. Meanwhile, Minambakkam observatory witnessed a massive 169 mm of rainfall. Other parts of Tamil Nadu have witnessed heavy showers of three-digit rains as well.

These rainfall activities can be attributed to the presence of a cyclonic circulation which is currently over Southwest Bay of Bengal off Sri Lanka coast and adjoining Tamil Nadu. Another cyclonic circulation is over Lakshadweep and Kerala region. Thus, moderate to strong winds from Bay of Bengal are feeding moisture over most parts of Tamil Nadu.

At present, Chennai rains are light after heavy downpours during the late-night hours. However, the situation is not likely to remain the same for long as heavy rains will once again make an appearance over the state capital.

As per weathermen at Skymet Weather, moderate to heavy rains are expected to occur over the city of Chennai for the next few days. In fact, these hefty showers are expected to continue for at least three to four days, which means until November 4.

Each year, during the Northeast Monsoon season, Chennai rains get intense and flooding occurs in the capital city throwing normal life out of gear. Some parts of Chennai may end up witnessing waterlogging and localised flooding this year as well, if heavy showers persist for a longer duration. However, the situation may not be as bad as 2015 floods in Chennai.
