Delhi weather not to dampen 67th Republic Day celebrations

January 26, 2016 7:15 AM |

Republic-Day-ParadeIndia will celebrate the 67th Republic day with great honor amidst the peak of winters in most parts.

This is the period which is generally vulnerable to many weather activities – thick of cold, dense fog, low clouds and low visibility. Inclement weather conditions are further aggravated by prolonged period of foggy weather.

During the past few years, January 26 has mostly witnessed a foggy morning and biting cold day like conditions. A similar situation is likely this year.

The main Republic Day Parade gets underway at about 9.30 in the morning, following the flag hoisting at 9 am. The air show starts between 11 and 11.30 am. More precision is required on air and thus, becomes challenging. This year fortunately, the weather will remain mostly clear and by then temperature could rise up to 10°C.

There is no threat on account of rainfall. Nevertheless, the capital will experience inclement weather due to cold weather. At present, we can see a Western Disturbance approaching North Pakistan and adjoining Jammu and Kashmir. As it’s not an active Western Disturbance, it will bring cloud cover and rain only in the higher reaches of the North Indian hills.

On a positive note, the weather system will bring some relief from the biting cold conditions in the northern plains including Delhi-NCR. Day temperature could rise up to 16°C. Minimum will not drop below 7°C for the next couple of days.

People planning to head out to Rajpath should rejoice as only shallow fog was witnessed on Tuesday morning. The situation will improve as the day progresses.

Spectators will, however, not be able to escape the chill in the morning hours as the temperature will hang in between 8 and 10°C. Light northwesterly winds will add to the chill factor.
