September 27, 2015 11:56 AM |

Dry spell ahead for Northwest IndiaThe Western Disturbance, which is over North Pakistan and adjoining Jammu and Kashmir is likely to become insignificant shortly. With no fresh Western Disturbance coming up in the next few days, the plains of North India are expected to witness a prolonged dry spell.

The withdrawal of the Southwest Monsoon has already taken place from parts of Rajasthan. However, there has been a delay of its withdrawal from Northwest India as some showers were observed a few days back.

This Monsoon, Northwest India is rain deficient by 16 percent (which is considered to be normal). Many areas in the region have been highly deficient leading to a drought like situation. For instance, East Uttar Pradesh and West Uttar Pradesh have been observing a deficiency of 47 percent and 42 percent, respectively.  Also, Haryana is deficit by 37 percent while Punjab is deficient by 31 percent.

Northwest India followed the same pattern last year as well. Punjab and Haryana were 50 and 57 percent rain deficient, respectively. Also, East Uttar Pradesh and West Uttar Pradesh had observed a rainfall deficiency of 42 percent and 56 percent, respectively.

With the date of the withdrawal of Monsoon being just round the corner, the plains of North India will observe mainly bright and sunny skies with pleasant evenings. Warm weather conditions will prevail over the northern plains with dry winds taking over.
