Durga Puja 2017: Rains to dampen celebrations in Kolkata, West Bengal

Autumn is marked by the commencement of Navratri celebration or Durga Puja. Particularly, in West Bengal, Odisha, Assam and Tripura, Durga Puja or Durgotsava are one of the biggest and most anticipated celebrations of the year for Bengali Hindus.

Goddess Durga is the epitome of 'shakti', she is known to be the celestial ladylike power representing all enormous creation, presence, and change.

As per the Hindu mythology, Durga Puja is a yearly 10-day Hindu festivity, out of which the 6th to tenth days of the celebration is the most prominent. The festival is observed in the Ashvin mass of the Hindu calendar.

The preparations of the commemoration begin with Mahalaya and conclude with the Sindoor Bela and finally Durga visarjan.

This year Durga Puja also called Akalbodhan is starting from September 26 until September 30. The inhabitants of West Bengal particularly, Kolkata are already set up for the preliminaries, with pandals already set up in many parts. However, the weathermen at Skymet Weather predicts rains for parts of the state on all the prominent days of the festival that could dampen the Maha Pujo celebrations.

September 26 (Shashti): Parts of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal that includes districts such as Darjeeling, Siliguri, Cooch Behar may witness light rains. While the central parts of the state such as in Malda, Bardhaman, Krishnanagar, Berhampore could witness dry weather with partly cloudy to the cloudy sky.

Kolkata, on the other hand, is expected to witness cloudy weather followed by one or two short spells of rains.

September 27 (Saptami): Most districts of West Bengal will receive light to moderate rains on the Saptami or the seventh day of the Durga Puja celebrations. Kolkata will have to manage with cloudy weather and short rainy spells.

September 28 (Ashtami): Ashtami in most parts of West Bengal will bring light to moderate spells. While it may be ushered with moderate showers with one or two heavy spells in Kolkata.

September 29 (Navami): Light to moderate rains are anticipated on the Navami or the ninth day of the celebrations. For Kolkata, Navami will be celebrated with moderate with isolated heavy showers.

September 30 (Dashami): People of the Kolkata may celebrate Sindoor Bela under light with isolated moderate showers. While, for the rest of West Bengal, light to moderate rain is expected on the Dashami or the last day of the festival.
