First Century Rainfall Of Mumbai In August, More Showers Ahead

August 9, 2022 2:16 PM |

Airport observatory of Mumbai received heavy rainfall during last evening and night. Santacruz recorded 124mm rainfall in 24hr till 8.30 A.M .  Colaba observatory remained a distant 2nd with just 55mm rainfall. Entire  Konkan coast  between Ratnagiri and Dahanu rained heavily with Mahabaleshwar clocking the highest of 192mm. Moderate to heavy showers are continuing and intermittent spell are expected throughout the day with short breaks.

Well marked low pressure in the Bay of Bengal is likely to become depression, anytime soon. On the western end, cyclonic circulation is marked over central parts of Gujarat and Gulf of Cambay. An east-west oriented shearline joining these 2 systems is embedded with another circulation over Vidarbha. This situation is streaming strong westerly winds across Arabian Sea, meeting head-on the Konkan coast.  Converging winds are bringing intense showers over Mumbai and suburbs and will continue through the day.

Santacruz, the official observatory of Mumbai has received 3 digits 24hr rainfall after more than 3 weeks. Last heavy spell was sometime in July, between the 10th and 15th, but evaded century rainfall.  The 1st week of July was tramped repeatedly with 3 digit rainfall on 01st, 02nd, 05th, 06th and 07thJuly.  The city observatory has accumulated  267mm of rainfall in August against its monthly normal of 560.8mm.

The cyclonic circulation over Gulf of Cambay is tightening and becoming strong.  The winds from the Arabian Sea will be rushing over that region, depleting moisture over the Konkan coast.  Accordingly, the intensity of rains will reduce today and become just intermittent and moderate tomorrow, with long breaks in between. Mumbai will remain ‘quiet’ for the subsequent 3 days, from 11thto 13th Aug. Only sporadic showers with light intensity are expected during this period.
