Amarnath Yatra: Weather continues to play spoil sport, relief lies ahead

July 12, 2015 2:54 PM |

Amarnath Yatra WeatherUpdated on July 12, 2015: Mainly moderate rainfall is likely to affect the Amarnath Yatra for the next 24 hours. Heavy rain is also expected at a few places in the region. Bad weather had halted the Yatra earlier in the week and pilgrims from both routes were asked to stop.

Significant relief is not expected before July 14 when the weather is likely to clear up. Only isolated rains will be witnessed during this period.

But heavy rain has caused landslides in the region and slippery muddy paths lie ahead for the pilgrims. In such conditions, the authorities will have to exercise care and caution before resuming the Yatra.

Updated on July 11, 2015: Most parts of the hills of North India have observed heavy to very heavy rain. Bad weather in the region has halted the Amarnath Yatra temporarily. Pilgrims from both North Kashmir Baltal and South Kashmir Pahalgam routes have been stopped at Patnitop.

Heavy rainfall along the route and around the cave shrine has resulted in the halt of the yatra. Also, on July 9, a landslide in the Ramban district due to heavy rain had blocked the Jammu-Srinagar highway. It has been continuously raining along the mountain tracks of both the base camps. The yatra will resume once again when the weather improves.

Till July 9, more than one lakh devotees have already had the darshan of the holy lingam in the cave.

Let’s take a look at the rainfall figures in the last 24 hours in these states.

Heavy Rains Lash the Hills of North India, Amarnath Yatra temporarily halted

Heavy rains also reduce the visibility making movement difficult and causing interruptions in travel. If incessant rains continue over the region for a long period of time, landslides may take place.  The rainfall is expected to continue for next 3 to 4 days. The yatra will only begin after there is a significant improvement in the weather.

Meanwhile, heavy rains may also affect the Mansarovar yatra as good Monsoon showers have been lashing the route of the yatra and more rain is expected.
