Updated on March 24, 2018: After giving widespread rain and thundershowers, the weather of the northern hills has cleared and has now become dry. All thanks to the Western Disturbance that was affecting the Western Himalayan region and resulted in rain and thundershowers. The higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir even witnessed some snowfall as well.
These rains also resulted in plunging the mercury levels by a few notches.
However, now the Western Disturbance which has given good rain and snow has moved away eastwards. Due to this, the weather has become dry. Now, another feeble Western Disturbance as an upper air system is likely to affect the Western Himalayan region around March 25.
This weather system would be feeble in nature and thus would not be capable of giving widespread rains over all the three hilly states of North India. Yet, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand can brace for some light rain along with snow over the higher reaches.
On the other hand, the southern parts of these states may get to witness mainly dry weather with a partly cloudy sky. The regions that can anticipate light spells in the next 24 hours include Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Leh, Manali, and Gulmarg. However, Shimla, Srinagar, Nainital may have to settle with partly cloudy skies as the chances of rain is low.
Skymet Weather further reiterates that as we are approaching April, the intensity, as well as frequency of Western Disturbance, would start reducing. As the summer progresses, the Western Disturbance tends to travel in the upper latitude and hence, their effect also reduces over Indian regions.
Updated on March 23, 2018: Fairly widespread rain and thundershowers that have lashed the hills of North India on Tuesday were no less than a boon as it dropped the maximum temperatures significantly. The higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir even witnessed some snowfall as well.
Within the span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Thursday, Mukteshwar recorded 12 mm of rains, Tehri 10 mm, Solan 7.2 mm, Manali 4.4 mm, Kullu 2.6 mm, Shimla 1.7 mm, Gulmarg 1.3 mm, Banihal 1 mm and Keylong and Nainital witnessed some traces of rain.
However, now the Western Disturbance which has given good rain and snow has moved away eastwards. Its remnants may give some isolated rain and thundershowers over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand for the next 24 hours as well.
Thereafter, the weather over the hills of North India will become dry. Moreover, as of now, any fresh Western Disturbance is also not anticipated to approach the hills of North India and thus, the weather of all the three hilly states namely Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh is expected to remain dry throughout the remaining days of March.
