The city of Kolkata was witnessing very poor rains until last week, with the rain deficiency is exceeding 90%.

But the last three days have proved to be good for the city in terms of good amounts of rainfall.

Moderate to heavy spells have been recorded during this period along with lightening, thundershower and strong winds. In the last three days, the Dum Dum Observatory has received 89 mm of rains while Alipore received 78 mm of rainfall.

Looking at the figures for the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Tuesday, Dum Dum has recorded 41 mm of rain while 55 mm of rain was observed in Alipore, which is more than the city's  monthly average of 21 mm.

Comparing the present figures with that of the previous years, this is the second-best rain performance in Kolkata in the last one decade. In 2016, the city had received 94.5 mm rain in the entire month of February.

More rains of similar intensity are likely over the city in the next 24 hours. At present, a caution has been issued against heavy rains accompanied with lightening, thunderstorm and gusty winds.

These rains will reduce tomorrow onward and the weather will clear up by March 1. With such intense rains in sight the rainfall deficiency which at present stands at 38% is sure to go down.
