The cyclonic circulation persists over southwest Bay of Bengal, off Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coast. The circulation has shifted the rain belt a little upwards in last 24 hours. Accordingly, northern parts of Tamil Nadu and adjoining Andhra Pradesh received good pre-Monsoon rain.

The wind discontinuity running from Maharashtra to Karnataka persists, but has shifted upwards. The feeble cyclonic circulation can also be seen lingering on over coastal Karnataka.

Here’s a look at the rainfall figures in South India, in a span of 24 hours from 8.30 am on Thursday.

Rain in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu once again received fairly widespread rain. Coonoor received 39.5 mm of rain, Pamban 19.4 mm, Chennai 12 mm and Kodaikanal 16 mm, Dharmapuri 5 mm, Kanyakumari 11 mm. Madurai received moderate rainfall and recorded 43.6 mm. In the interiors of the state, Salem recorded 2.2 mm and Coimbatore 5.3 mm of rain.

Rain in Kerala

Rain has reduced over Kerala and only Thiruvananthapuram received good showers of 23 mm, in last 24 hours.

Rain in Karnataka

Karnataka received light rain with Honnavar recording 0.3 mm of rain, Mangalore 4 mm and Karwar 0.1 mm. In the interiors of the state, Madikeri received 0.4 mm, Belgaum 0.2 mm, and Bangalore traces of rain.

Weather Forecast  

Rain will now reduce over Kerala and extreme southern parts of Tamil Nadu. The satellite image shows dark clouds more over the sea than the land. Tamil Nadu coast and adjoining south coastal Andhra Pradesh and coastal Karnataka will continue to receive rain during next 2 days, but with reduced intensity.

Updated on May 14: The cyclonic circulation over southwest Bay of Bengal brings good showers in South India

South India witnessed only scattered rain in the initial days of May. Moreover, rain was confined to the coastal areas only. The cyclonic circulation, now present over southwest Bay of Bengal, has been lingering on over south Tamil Nadu and adjoining areas for quite some time. In last 3 days, the system brought record breaking rain in several parts of the peninsula.

Pre-Monsoon rain was widespread, varying from very light to heavy. Isolated places received above 100 mm of rainfall in last 24 hours. The rain belt has been shifting upwards.

Here’s a look at the rainfall figures in Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday.

Rain in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu received fairly widespread rain in last 24 hours. Coonoor received 55.4 mm of rain, Pamban 40 mm and Kodaikanal 58 mm. In the interiors of the state, Salem recorded 25.6 mm and Coimbatore 19 mm of rain.

Rain in Kerala

Kerala received light rain with Kozhikode recording 5 mm of rain, Kannur 5.4 mm, Alappuzha 3 mm and Punalur just traces of rain.

Rain in Karnataka

The coastal stations of Karnataka received good showers with Honnavar recording 66.4 mm of rain and Karwar 97.1 mm. In the interiors of the state, Madikeri received 16.4 mm, Belgaum 10.2 mm, Mysore 9 mm and Mangalore 5.2 mm.

Weather Forecast for South India

Multiple weather systems are responsible for enhanced pre-Monsoon activity over Peninsular India. Firstly, there is a wind discontinuity running from Maharashtra to Karnataka. There is one feeble cyclonic circulation over coastal Karnataka and another cyclonic circulation over southwest Bay of Bengal. In view of these weather systems, the rain belt will shift further upwards bringing heavy rain over coastal Karnataka, north coastal Tamil Nadu, parts of south coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining Rayalaseema region. Rest of South India will receive light scattered rain at least for next 48 hours.
