An earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale jolted Afghanistan at 15:35 (IST) on Monday. The tremors of the Quake were also felt in adjoining Pakistan and parts of North India including Srinagar and Delhi. The epicenter of the earthquake was in the Hindukush region of Afghanistan at a depth of 210 km.
There haven’t been reports of any casualties so far.
Earlier this year, an earthquake of magnitude 7.9 shook Nepal and neighbouring Indian states of Bihar and West Bengal. The tremors were also felt in the national capital Delhi. The earthquake had caused massive destruction in both Nepal and Bihar.
An earthquake has an aftershock and foreshock. Whenever there is an earthquake of a larger magnitude there are aftershocks which could be light to moderate in intensity. Foreshock happens before a larger magnitude earthquake. Therefore, the Afghanistan earthquake could be construed as a foreshock. The duration between the foreshock and the main shock could take weeks or even months. However, there is nothing to establish whether its is a foreshock or not. If another earthquake occurs, then only can we draw any conclusion.
