TN and Andhra receives good rain due to prevailing system in Bay of Bengal

Rain in South IndiaUpdate on December 29: The system persisting over southwest Bay of Bengal continues to give moderate to heavy widespread rain over entire Tamil Nadu, coastal Andhra Pradesh and traces of rainfall over Odisha. According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, the system has been sustaining its strength, however showing signs of weakening.

As per, rainfall will witness a reduction in intensity, as the system moves forward along the east coast. The rain belt will also shift its focus and will cover coastal and interior parts of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, and even parts of West Bengal during the next 24 hours. Kolkata might witness rain on the eve of New Year.

In a span of last 24 hours, Chennai in Tamil Nadu recorded 87 mm of rainfall, Karaikal 18 mm, Nagapattinam 12.4 mm, Palayamkottai 14 mm, Coimbatore 5.3 mm, Cuddalore 5 mm and Madurai 3.5 mm.

Update on December 28: The system prevailing over southwest Bay of Bengal has given good rainfall over Tamil Nadu and extreme coastal parts of Andhra Pradesh and Kerala on December 29. According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, these spells can be considered as the last spell of the Northeast Monsoon, which is witnessed from October till December.

In a span of last 24 hours, Nagapattinam recorded 24 mm, Cuddalore 19 mm, Karaikal 16 mm, Chennai 14 mm, Trichy 9 mm and Pamban 5 mm of rain. While, Thiruvanathapuram in Kerala received 12 mm and Nellore in Andhra Pradesh recorded 2 mm of rain.

According to Skymet, the system is presently sustaining its strength and will continue to give rain with increased intensity Monday onwards. However, the system will show signs of weakening after next 48 hours.

As the system moves forward, the spread of rain will also increase. The rain belt will shift from Tamil Nadu and cover parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and even parts of West Bengal. In view of the system, heavy rain will be confined to sea region only, while coastal areas will witness light to moderate spells.

Currently, the system is moving along the east coast and this proximity with the coast will not let the system intensify further.
