Chennai rains to continue, showers to be heavy in parts

Rains have once again picked up pace over Tamil Nadu, which has been battling deficit rains. All thanks to the Northeast Monsoon that is likely to make an onset anytime now.

In fact, last 24 hours have seen rains returning to few parts of the state, although intensity was limited to scattered light to moderate rains. In the last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Monday, the capital city of Chennai recorded 8 mm of rain, followed by Kanyakumari which witnessed traces only.

Now, in view of the Northeast Monsoon making onset, widespread rains are expected to lash the state of Tamil Nadu during the next 24 hours. Thus, we can say that moderate rains with few heavy spells will be observed in many parts of Tamil Nadu during the next two to three days. Intensity of these rains will be more on November 1.

The Northeast Monsoon season is the rainiest season for the state of Tamil Nadu, with October being the rainiest month. Even though the Northeast Monsoon delayed its onset, but still Tamil Nadu received good rains during October.

In fact, the first half of October was largely excess as good rains lashed many parts of Tamil Nadu. However, after Storm Titli, rainfall activity receded significantly, making the second half not so ok in terms of rains.

Due to reduced rains, the large excess for Tamil Nadu started to get consumed and now has become almost zero. On October 27, Tamil Nadu was rain surplus and deficient at 0%. Thereafter, rain deficiency over Tamil Nadu is continuing to add up as no good rains have occurred over the state for the last many days. On October 30, Tamil Nadu is rain deficient by 8%.
