Retreating Monsoon to bring in a second Summer

October 5, 2015 3:02 PM |

Retreating Monsoon causing hot weather conditionsAfter taking its leave from Rajasthan and Northwest India, Southwest Monsoon has now withdrawn from Uttar Pradesh, some parts of Bihar and more areas in Madhya Pradesh. Presently, the withdrawal line passes through Forbesganj, Jabalpur, Gaya, Hoshangabad, Bhavnagar, and Porbandar.

The western end of the withdrawal line has not changed much and remains over Porbandar. However, the eastern arm of the line is moving and has covered many parts of Bihar as well. Nevertheless, the western end is lagging behind as by October 1, Monsoon usually withdraws from Madhya Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.

The further withdrawal may even get delayed due to the upcoming rainy spell over Madhya Maharashtra and Konkan & Goa. Also, areas including West Bengal and Odisha will also get some rain due to the system in the Bay of Bengal.

After the withdrawal of Monsoon, many parts of the country experience hot weather conditions. This phenomenon is also known as the second summer. During this time, skies clear up, dry winds take over and temperatures witness a steep rise. These conditions last only for a week or two, and is not a long process.

Southwest Monsoon has withdrawn from Rajasthan and hot weather conditions have already taken a front seat. Gujarat may have to wait a little as a system is expected to give some rain over the region. However, many areas in Gujarat are already reeling under the second summer phenomenon. For instance, Bhuj recorded 40.5°C as its maximum. Also, Bundi and Churu in Rajasthan recorded 40°C and 41°C as maximum temperatures.

In a few days’ time, when Southwest Monsoon bids adieu to the eastern parts of India completely, Odisha and West Bengal will also witness what we call the second summer.
