After the pre-summer heat wave that has wrecked havoc over the country, the water levels in the 31 reservoirs in South India stand at only 17 percent of the total storage capacity. The dip in water level is the lowest in the country.
This water is used for drinking, electrical and irrigational purposes. The low level is an alarming situation with summer already in place & parts of Maharashtra already whirling under acute water crisis.
The Government report says that the water storage in the major reservoirs of the country as of March 31, 2016 was 39.651 BCM. This is 25 percent of total storage capacity of these reservoirs.
These 31 reservoirs in southern region are located in various parts of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The total storage capacity of these reservoirs is 51.59 BCM.
“The storage in this year is less than the corresponding period of last year and is also less than the average storage of last ten years.” said the data issued by the government.

The reservoir of northern region in India that has 6 reservoirs is at 25 percent of total capacity. The eastern region reservoirs of India with 15 reservoirs are clocked at 38 percent of total storage capacity.
The western region of the country that has 27 reservoirs is available at 21 percent of the capacity. Central region with 12 reservoirs has 32 percent of total storage capacity of these reservoirs.
