Rainy Spell May Interrupt Dussehra Festivities In Kolkata
Durga Puja festivities are underway in West Bengal. The capital city Kolkata is overjoyed with celebrations on the occasion of Durga Puja, a week-long commemoration of the foremost festival for the state. The chief events of Mahashtami, Mahanavami, and Dussehra will fall on 30th Sep, 1st Oct, and 2nd Oct respectively. This is the retreating monsoon phase and quite often coincides with a spell of seasonal monsoon rains. However, the spirit and excitement never get dampened, irrespective of weather conditions.
Earlier, the city of Kolkata was nearly drowned last week. Very heavy rains lashed southern parts of Gangetic West Bengal. Rail, road, and air operations were badly impacted, and aviation activities were suspended for some time. There was a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal triggering adverse weather conditions. The conditions have improved, but all is not yet over and done.
Courtesy of the remnant weather system traversing across Vietnam, Thailand, and Myanmar and entering the Bay of Bengal, a fresh low-pressure area is likely to form over the central and northern parts of the Bay of Bengal within the next 24 hours. The system will gain strength and may become a depression over the sea itself. It is expected to cross the South Odisha Coast on 27th September. Though the core of the system will move away from Gangetic West Bengal on 28th Sep and later days, the circulatory pattern of winds will fuel the coastline of the state with plenty of moisture. Simultaneously, the wave of remnant circulations across Thailand and Myanmar will keep the coastlines of Bangladesh and Myanmar along the north and northeast Bay of Bengal very active. Stormy weather conditions are expected between 28th Sep and 3rd Oct, with peak activity on 1st and 2nd October 2025.
An east-west trough will run from the inland depression to the North Arakan Coast, keeping proximity with the southern shore of Gangetic West Bengal. Light to moderate showers are likely over and around the capital city on 28th and 29th Sep. The intensity and spread of weather activity will increase on the subsequent days, between 30th Sep and 3rd Oct. Fierce weather conditions with heavy rain, thundershowers, and strong winds are likely on 1st and 2nd October. There is a likelihood of lightning storms during that period. The incessant rains may lead to localized flooding and inundation, impacting the festivities, more adversely on these two days.
